Going at great length for digitally enhanced healthcare

At the heart of the Hola 5G Oulu project lies a firm commitment to improving the lives of both patients and healthcare providers. We believe that technology should serve humanity, and in this case, that means empowering medical teams with tools that make their jobs easier, more efficient, and ultimately, more effective. We are dedicated to going above and beyond to ensure that this 5G network seamlessly integrates into the hospital workflow, providing tangible benefits to doctors and nurses in their daily routines. This dedication drives our collaborative approach, our meticulous testing, and our focus on user-centric design.

Testing on technology quality

Oulu University has taken a meticulous approach to measuring the impact of this groundbreaking 5G deployment. Before the installation of the private 5G network, they conducted comprehensive reference measurements within the current operating hospital environment. Oulu University hospital will be moved to a new building later this year. This approach will ensure that the solution is working seamlessly as soon as the new hospital starts operating. The data collected will be invaluable in quantifying the improvements brought about by the new technology.

The assessment doesn’t stop there. Oulu University will continue to monitor and analyze network performance at key stages:

  • Initial installation: Once the 5G network is live in the designated ward and operating theatres, a new set of measurements will be taken to assess its performance in a real-world, but still relatively controlled, setting.
  • Full hospital operation: The most crucial evaluation will occur once the hospital is fully functioning with the private 5G network integrated into daily operations. This will provide the most accurate picture of the network’s impact on patient care, staff efficiency, and overall hospital workflows.

This rigorous, multi-stage measurement strategy underscores the commitment of the Hola 5G Oulu project to evidence-based innovation. By meticulously tracking the impact of the private 5G network, the project aims to provide concrete data that demonstrates the transformative potential of this technology for healthcare.

User-centric approach

Oulu University has also recognized the critical importance of user-centric design in this project. They are working in close collaboration with doctors and nurses, the very people who will be using this technology on a daily basis. This hands-on approach ensures that the 5G network and associated applications are:

  • Intuitive and user-friendly: The technology must be easy to understand and operate, even in high-pressure medical situations.
  • Practical and relevant: The applications developed must address real-world challenges faced by healthcare professionals and improve existing workflows.
  • Seamlessly integrated: The new technology should integrate smoothly with existing hospital systems and processes to avoid disruptions and maximize efficiency.

By actively involving doctors and nurses in the development and implementation process, the Hola 5G Oulu project aims to ensure that the technology is not just cutting-edge, but also truly beneficial and practical for those on the front lines of patient care. This collaborative approach is essential for driving adoption and maximizing the positive impact of the 5G network on healthcare delivery.
